Winston Peters’ constant whinging mirrors Donald Trump’s playbook

OPINION: Winston Peters is constantly whinging and increasingly acting like American President Donald Trump, leaning on grievance and repetition instead of offering anything that resembles a serious policy alternative.

His latest attack on Labour follows the same well-worn script of the playbook, claiming the opposition is out of ideas. It is a line designed to land hard and travel fast while sidestepping the harder task of engaging with actual policy detail and doing the job he was elected to do.

Debate turns into performance and the race becomes about who can be louder rather than who can be clearer, but voters are growing tired of the noise and expect more than constant outrage from a politician who should be focused on delivering substance rather than theatrics.

At his State of the Nation speech Peters leaned into a tone similar to Trump, telling supporters the country had “inherited a disaster” and was “paying a massive price” for it, language that prioritised grievance over clear direction and closely mirrors Trump’s political playbook.

There is a place for sharp criticism in politics and Labour’s handling of key issues deserves scrutiny. But the steady drumbeat of complaints and sweeping claims from the serial whinger, Peters, drags the public conversation away from substance and into a cycle of noise that benefits no one.

It is a style that has become instantly recognisable in the United States where Trump turned constant grievance into a political weapon. Complex issues are reduced into simple lines that can be repeated until they stick regardless of their depth.

Peters appears to be following that same path, relying on blunt language and broad attacks that paint opponents as fundamentally incapable rather than engaging in a contest of ideas. It feels out of step with New Zealand’s political tradition.

But the more this rhetoric takes hold, the more it reshapes expectations of the veteran politician.

Labour should be challenged on its record, on its policy direction and on whether it is ready to govern. Those challenges carry far more weight when they are supported rather than crafted into a narrative built on constant complaints.

What Peters is offering instead feels like imitation politics. A borrowed style that thrives on division and frustration and one that risks pulling New Zealand further into a model of damaging debate that has already proven deeply concerning.

The working class deserves a higher standard than constant whinging and imported political playbook rhetoric.
