Winston Peters is becoming New Zealand’s own Donald Trump

OPINION: New Zealand does not need its own Donald Trump, but Winston Peters increasingly appears determined to fill the role.

The New Zealand First leader has built a political strategy around provocation and permanent conflict with the media. He identifies an enemy, launches an inflammatory attack, waits for condemnation and then tells supporters the establishment is trying to silence him.

It is the same formula that powered Trump and the MAGA movement in the United States and Peters is adapting it for a New Zealand audience.

Peters’ “go back to your own country” attack on Green MP Lawrence Xu-Nan was outright racist. Xu-Nan was born in China but grew up in Auckland and has spent most of his life in New Zealand. He directly questioned whether a fellow elected MP truly belonged in this country, then refused to retreat, attacking the media as “pearl clutchers” and “communist shills” when held accountable for the racist remark.

China lodged a formal diplomatic protest, turning a domestic political stunt into an international controversy.

That escalation is the centre-point to Trump-style culture-war politics being imported into New Zealand. It allows a grumpy politician to turn every criticism into another confrontation and give the loyal base another reason to cheer as Patriots.

Peters’ most devoted supporters increasingly resemble a Kiwi version of the MAGA political fandom. Every complaint becomes proof he is upsetting the right people, despite that being far from the truth. The political programme follows the culture-war pattern.

New Zealand First pushed legislation formally recognising English as an official language, despite English already dominating Parliament, government, education and commerce.

Peters has also complained about the growing use of te reo Māori, presenting national identity as something under threat.

The party is advancing legislation defining “woman” and “man” in biological terms across New Zealand law but whatever view people hold on that debate, the political purpose is crystal clear. It places an emotionally charged identity issue into the spotlight while ignoring the struggling New Zealanders who are worried about living costs, housing, healthcare and employment.

Culture-war politics offers few practical answers to those pressures.

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon described Peters’ comments as racist and accused him of driving xenophobia. He has still refused to remove him.

That contradiction exposes the coalition’s weakness. Luxon wants the public to believe Peters crossed a serious line, but not one serious enough to carry consequences.

Calling Peters the “Kiwi Trump” does not mean the two men are identical. The comparison is about the political machinery surrounding their orbit.

Both rely on grievance and both treat institutions as enemies when challenged. They use attacks to dominate attention.

Intensely loyal supporters see outrage as evidence their leader is supposedly winning.

Peters is dividing the country between those considered authentically Kiwi and those whose belonging can be questioned.

It is calculated division.
