Backseat fugitive nabbed in Kaeo after botched escape attempt

A wanted man hiding in the backseat of a moving vehicle has been arrested in Northland after a failed attempt to flee police.

Officers were searching for the 44-year-old on April 14 in connection with a series of burglaries across the region. Police moved toward an address of interest when they identified a vehicle linked to the suspect leaving the area.

Despite no immediate sighting, officers tracked the vehicle as it travelled into Kaeo.

The vehicle stopped on Wainui Road. The man jumped from the backseat and ran onto a nearby property, where he attempted to steal another vehicle.

The suspect was located and taken into custody.

The man faces four burglary charges, three counts of unlawfully taking a motor vehicle, and one count of driving while disqualified.

He remains in custody and is due to appear in Kaikohe District Court on April 28.
