Firearm seized in Onehunga shooting investigation

The Armed Offenders Squad was deployed to a Māngere property as Police investigating a targeted shooting in Onehunga recovered a shotgun and ammunition.

Detectives from the Auckland City Organised Crime Unit executed a search warrant at the address on Friday as part of ongoing enquiries into a shooting on Arthur Street on January 16.

A 43-year-old man has been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition. He appeared in the Auckland District Court over the weekend.

Police say they are unable to confirm at this stage whether the seized firearm was used in the shooting.

Frontline officers were first called to the Arthur Street property shortly after 11am on January 16 after reports a person had been shot. Officers located the victim with injuries consistent with a gunshot wound and they were transported to hospital in a critical condition.

Investigators established that several people arrived at the address in a dark-coloured Toyota van, exited the vehicle, and fired multiple shots at the house before fleeing the scene.

The vehicle was later located in Māngere after it was reported as suspicious by a member of the public. The van was seized and a forensic examination was conducted as part of the investigation.

The victim remains in hospital in a stable condition.

It is believed the shooting was a targeted incident. Investigators continue to carry out enquiries to identify and locate those responsible.

Police are appealing for information, including CCTV or dashcam footage from the Arthur Street area around the time of the shooting.
