Four arrested after alleged shoplifting incident tracked from North Shore to city

Four people have been arrested after an alleged shoplifting incident at a liquor store on Auckland’s North Shore escalated and ended with arrests in the city centre.

Police were called to a Sunnynook liquor store about 8.40pm on Wednesday night after reports that three people had entered the store, with two allegedly stealing boxes of alcohol.

Waitematā East Area Commander Inspector Mike Rickards said a store employee was confronted when he tried to intervene, after which additional associates of the alleged offenders became involved. The employee sustained minor injuries during the incident.

The group later boarded a bus, prompting police to track their movements into Auckland’s central city. Officers intercepted the bus near Britomart Square, where four individuals were arrested.

Inspector Rickards said two of those arrested were found to be carrying machetes.

A 22-year-old man has been charged with shoplifting and is due to appear in the North Shore District Court today. Police said further enquiries are ongoing.
