Human Bird Flu Vaccine trial gains urgency following New Zealand recording first H5N1 detection

A major human vaccine trial targeting bird flu has taken on fresh significance after New Zealand confirmed its first detection of the globally spreading H5N1 virus.

The highly pathogenic strain was found in a brown skua discovered at Petone Beach in Wellington. The Ministry for Primary Industries said the July 15 detection remained isolated, with no evidence of infection in poultry or other birds. The risk to human health was still considered low.

The discovery of vaccine potential came as researchers in Britain and the United States began testing Moderna’s experimental mRNA-1018 vaccine, designed to protect humans against the same H5N1 strain detected in New Zealand.

A phase three trial will involve about 4,000 adults aged 18 and older, making it the first late-stage human trial of an mRNA vaccine developed specifically against H5N1 bird flu. About three-quarters of participants will be recruited in Britain, with the remaining volunteers based in the United States. Researchers are prioritising poultry workers and people aged over 65 because they face greater risks of exposure or severe illness.

The trial will examine the vaccine’s safety and whether it produces a strong immune response capable of recognising and fighting the virus. Results are not yet available.

The vaccine uses technology already deployed in some COVID-19 vaccines. It delivers genetic instructions that prompt human cells to temporarily produce a harmless protein resembling one found on the surface of H5N1.

That protein trains the immune system to recognise the virus and create antibodies without exposing the recipient to bird flu.

The mRNA instructions are carried into cells inside microscopic fatty shells known as lipid nanoparticles. The mRNA then breaks down naturally after delivering its message, while the immune system retains a memory of the targeted viral protein.

The technology could allow vaccine manufacturers to adapt production more quickly if H5N1 changes or begins spreading between humans.

Human bird flu infections remain rare and are usually linked to close or prolonged contact with infected birds, poultry or other animals. There is no evidence the virus is currently spreading.

H5N1 has expanded rapidly through wild bird populations and crossed into more than 60 mammal species overseas, including cattle, marine mammals and domestic animals. Each new infection gives the virus another opportunity to change.

New Zealand had previously recorded a separate highly pathogenic bird flu outbreak at an Otago egg farm in December 2024. That outbreak involved H7N6, not the internationally spreading H5N1 strain. Authorities said the virus probably developed after free-range hens were exposed to a low-pathogenic avian influenza virus carried by wild waterfowl.

The human vaccine trial reflects an attempt to have tested vaccines and manufacturing systems ready before the virus poses a greater threat. For New Zealand, the confirmation of H5N1 has shifted that threat from an overseas concern to a virus now detected on the country’s shoreline.

The Petone detection marks a different threat because H5N1 can be carried over long distances by migratory and ocean-going birds.

Authorities have warned that the virus may be impossible to keep out permanently if it becomes established among wild bird populations.

New Zealand has increased surveillance and begun vaccinating core breeding populations of several endangered native species, including kākāpō and takahē, as officials prepare for the possibility of wider transmission.

There are currently no signs of widespread infection, mass wildlife deaths or an outbreak within the commercial poultry sector.

People who find three or more sick or dead wild birds together are being told not to touch or move them. Sightings should be reported immediately to Biosecurity New Zealand’s exotic pest and disease hotline on 0800 80 99 66.
