Milton man named after fatal Port Chalmers crash

Police have named the man killed in a violent crash that plunged part of Port Chalmers into darkness and left a young Dunedin driver facing serious criminal charges.

He was John Douglas Taylor, 44, of Milton.

Emergency services were called to Wickliffe Road about 9.10pm on January 30 after a car slammed into a power pole, cutting electricity to nearby homes. The impact drew residents into the street, where neighbours rushed to help the injured before emergency crews arrived.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand crews found the vehicle heavily damaged and power lines hanging low.

One occupant was dead at the scene. Two others were injured, including one seriously.

The Serious Crash Unit carried out a scene examination and inquiries remain ongoing.

A 24-year-old Dunedin man has appeared in the Dunedin District Court charged with dangerous driving causing death and failing to stop to ascertain injury or death. He remains on interim name suppression and did not seek bail.

Police have signalled further serious charges are under consideration. The case is due back in court later this month.

Police extended their condolences to Mr Taylor’s family and loved ones.
