Teenager charged after failed ram raid at Kaikohe supermarket

A 14-year-old has been charged after a failed ram raid at New World on Memorial Avenue in Kaikohe early Thursday morning last week.

Police were called about 2.40am after a stolen vehicle was reversed into the front of the supermarket during an attempted burglary. One of the offenders tried to smash the glass but failed to gain entry before the pair fled.

Officers later located the vehicle in Kaikohe and tracked it from a distance as it travelled about seventy kilometres south toward Dargaville.

The vehicle eventually stopped and both occupants ran. The passenger was caught by police while the driver escaped.

During enquiries, officers learned a sawn-off shotgun had been thrown from the vehicle during the journey. The firearm was recovered from the roadside near Kaikohe.

The teen appeared in the Whangārei Youth Court and faced charges including burglary, intentional damage, unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, and unlawfully taking a motor vehicle.

Authorities are continuing to search for the second offender.
