Billy Te Kahika suffers from stroke after a heart attack, latest update says he is making good progress

Controversial activist Billy Te Kahika jnr‘s health remains under watch after suffering from a stroke while recovering from a recent heart attack.

A statement published on Te Kahika’s Facebook page on July 25 said he suffered the stroke on Wednesday night. The post said doctors had found “a little damage” to the left side of his brain but were confident he could make a full recovery, although the process would take time.

A further update thanked supporters for their messages, love and prayers, saying Te Kahika had “made good progress so far”.

No additional details have been released about Te Kahika’s treatment, how the stroke has affected him.

The medical setback comes shortly after the 54-year-old was airlifted from Northland to Auckland City Hospital following a heart attack. Te Kahika previously said he waited two days before seeking medical attention despite experiencing serious symptoms. Doctors later identified a clot in his heart.

An earlier update said condition had improved following a significant positive change overnight, allowing Te Kahika to breathe properly for the first time in three days.

Te Kahika rose to national prominence during the Covid-19 pandemic through online broadcasts, anti-vaxx protests and political campaigning. He co-led Advance NZ ahead of the 2020 general election, but the party failed to enter Parliament.

His supporters have continued posting messages and prayers as he begins what is expected to be a lengthy recovery.
