Burglary trail ends with van down embankment near Amberley

A Christchurch burglary suspect has been arrested after a stolen trailer was discovered abandoned near Amberley, leading Police to a van crashed down a roadside embankment.

The trailer had been taken overnight from a Cole Porter Avenue address in Mairehau.

Police were alerted when a member of the public found the sign-written trailer on the outskirts of Amberley and phoned the number displayed on it. The owner then contacted authorities.

Officers arrived to find the van’s owner back with the trailer.

The van was located nearby at the bottom of an embankment after the tow ball ripped free and remained lodged in the trailer’s coupling.

The driver escaped without serious injury and was arrested at the scene. He has been charged with burglary, two counts of theft relating to petrol drive-offs, and possessing drug utensils.

Further charges are likely pending testing of a substance found among his belongings.

Authorities are also investigating other offending in the Mairehau area overnight.
