Police swarm North Canterbury after dangerous car meet behaviour

Police conducted a heavy enforcement operation across North Canterbury during the Muscle Car Madness weekend after serious safety concerns emerged around car enthusiast activity in Rangiora and surrounding areas.

Inspector Peter Cooper, Area Commander Canterbury Rural, said officers maintained a highly visible presence throughout the event as they moved quickly to shut down risky and unlawful behaviour.

Across the weekend, police and court bailiffs seized or impounded 11 vehicles, while multiple drivers were stopped and processed for offending. Four excess breath alcohol detections were recorded, along with one related arrest, as police targeted intoxicated drivers and unsafe conduct on public roads.

Although the Muscle Car Madness Car Show itself proceeded without major incident, police were deeply concerned by what unfolded at the nearby temporary camping area.

Widespread intoxication and dangerous driving fell well short of acceptable standards and led to questions about whether the site should be approved for future events.

Challenging weather conditions added further strain and there appeared to be little effective contingency planning in place, which compounded the problems faced over the weekend.

Police will conduct a full review of the activity and enforcement outcomes warning that future events will face even stronger scrutiny if safety concerns are not addressed.
