Chris Hipkins details Labour’s plan to ease household costs through transport, healthcare and supermarket changes

For many households, the election campaign is unfolding against a much more immediate concern. Whether there is enough money left after groceries, fuel, power bills and rates are paid.

That pressure formed a part of Labour leader Chris Hipkins’ latest election pitch, with the party promising further measures aimed at reducing everyday household costs and putting more money back into family budgets.

Speaking in a wide-ranging interview on The Hui, Hipkins said many New Zealanders were not yet focused on politics because their attention remained fixed on getting through the week.

“People are focused on their own day-to-day lives at the moment. They’re focused on just surviving,” he said.

Labour is positioning cheaper transport, lower healthcare costs and stronger supermarket competition as part of its response.

Public transport subsidies and fare caps were highlighted as measures that could reduce regular expenses quickly, while cheaper access to doctors was presented as another way to ease pressure on household finances.

“A free doctor’s visit puts more money back in your pocket,” Hipkins said.

Food costs are also set to become a bigger part of Labour’s campaign.

A new supermarket policy is still to be announced, but Hipkins confirmed the party wants greater competition in the grocery sector and believes previous efforts have not delivered enough for consumers.

“What we’ve done so far in the supermarket sector across successive governments hasn’t delivered the gains that New Zealanders deserve to see and we’re going to do more,” he said.

The challenge is that changes to supermarket competition are unlikely to produce immediate savings.

Hipkins acknowledged that reality, arguing short-term measures would need to sit alongside longer-term reforms so households could receive relief sooner rather than waiting for structural changes to take effect.

“There are practical things that the government can do in the meantime that gives families back more of their money so that they can actually afford to get the basics,” he said.

The message reflects Labour’s attempt to keep the campaign focused on four areas it believes matter most to voters: jobs, health, housing and the cost of living.

The economic pressure that followed the Covid-19 period had hurt families and contributed to Labour losing support at the previous election.

With further policy still to come, the party is now trying to convince voters that its next set of proposals can translate political promises into savings they notice in their weekly budgets.
