Christopher Luxon’s coalition problem is now his survival problem

OPINION: Christopher Luxon has a problem bigger than the polls. He has a credibility problem, and it is being made worse by the two childish men acting as stooges standing beside him.

The issue exposed in my exclusive The Evidence Gap: When governance loses sight of reality episode is that Luxon has no idea what the hell he is doing, but there is a reason for that. He is being let down by the two stooges playing theatrical games instead of getting on with the job they were voted in to do.

The Government is talking about recovery, confidence and forecasts, while many households are still waiting to feel the proof in their own lives.

That gap is now politically dangerous for Luxon. He cannot keep asking New Zealanders to believe the country is back on track while his Government looks trapped between Winston Peters’ grievance politics and David Seymour’s ideological crusades. If Luxon wants his Government to survive, he needs to ditch both of them.

That does not mean pretending MMP does not exist. It means recognising that National’s brand is being swallowed by its own coalition partners. The Government is formally built around National, ACT and New Zealand First, with official coalition operating arrangements acknowledging the three-party structure. But what may have been necessary to take power is now becoming a liability in the fight to keep it.

Luxon’s original pitch was competence. He sold himself as a business-minded manager who would steady the ship, cut waste and focus on delivery. That message only works if voters believe the Prime Minister is in control.

Right now, that control is not obvious enough.

In Luxon’s State of the Nation speech, recovery is framed as having arrived. Inflation is said to be down. Business confidence is up. These signals are presented as evidence that progress is underway and that the country is moving forward. But within the speech itself, there is no evidence that real disposable incomes have meaningfully improved.

At one point, the Prime Minister acknowledges that the recovery “took so long to get traction” and that the period has been “challenging” for families. That admission is notable because it recognises delay and difficulty. But the speech then quickly moves on without addressing whether households are still behind, or how much cumulative cost-of-living damage has been absorbed.

The speech repeatedly relies on macro-economic indicators to support its claims, while offering no clear account of how wages have kept pace with costs or how economic affordability has improved. There is no discussion of whether families are financially better off month to month.

Every time the Government reaches for a clean economic message, it is dragged back into coalition noise. Every time Luxon needs to talk about household relief, delivery and stability, he is forced to carry the political weight of Peters and Seymour.

One pulls the Government into culture-war resentment. The other pushes it into hardline ideological fights that energise ACT’s base but narrow National’s appeal.

The latest Taxpayers’ Union-Curia polling in June put Labour at 32.2 percent and National at 30.1 percent, with NZ First at 11.4 percent and ACT at 7.8 percent. Those numbers show the pressure point clearly. National is not dominating the centre. Its partners are not simply helping it govern. They are competing for oxygen, identity and leverage.

Luxon should be worried by that.

A Prime Minister trying to win re-election cannot afford to look like the chair of a dispute committee. He has to look like the leader of a Government with one argument, one direction and one standard of evidence.

That is where the “evidence gap” becomes more than an economic critique. It becomes a political diagnosis.

The next general election is set for November 7 2026. That gives Luxon limited time to make his offer promising to voters. He can go to the country as the leader of National, asking for a stronger mandate to govern without being hostage to Peters and Seymour. Or he can keep defending a coalition that increasingly looks like it has more arguments than answers.

If Luxon wants voters to believe recovery is real, he must first prove he is really in charge.

That starts with ditching Peters and Seymour.
