Matthew Horncastle’s dinner and breakfast with the Prime Minister raises serious questions

OPINION: Williams Corporation Managing Director Matthew Horncastle’s back-to-back social media posts about his time with Prime Minister Christopher Luxon should concern all New Zealanders because of what he chose to say publicly afterward and the wider message it sends about proximity to power.

In one post, Horncastle praised a $10,000 National Party fundraiser dinner as “extremely good value for the quality of the experience”. In another, he described having breakfast with Luxon and declared the PM “a decent, intelligent professional” before assuring followers that “our country is in safe set of hands.”

The two meetings paint a daunting picture that goes beyond anything considered to be normal. They show Horncastle had repeated private access to the country’s most senior elected official, followed by glowing public endorsements that appear directly shaped by that access.

That should raise legitimate questions about the relationship between the two.

The concern is the way Horncastle’s endorsement is framed. Calling a $10,000 political dinner “good value” immediately invites the public to ask what exactly was being valued. The food, the company, or the access itself. Access to the PM creates opportunities for influence and private conversations that most citizens will never have.

Horncastle is effectively telling the public that because he spent time with the PM with a financial bribe, he is now in a position to vouch for his competence and character. That is not a neutral political opinion formed at a distance and actually one shaped by personal proximity to power.

When that private interaction is paired with public praise, it reinforces the perception that political relationships operate on a level unavailable to the wider public.

The issue here is perception, and perception matters deeply in politics. The trust in our leadership also depends on the belief that access to decision-makers is fair and not concentrated among wealthy or well-connected individuals.

When Horncastle openly brags about repeated access to the PM and presents that access as a premium experience or a source of political confidence, it feeds public suspicion that some voices carry more weight than others.

There is no evidence of wrongdoing, no suggestion of corrupt favours, and no indication of improper conduct by either Horncastle or Luxon. But political concern does not begin at corruption. Rather, it begins when public confidence starts to erode because the PM appears more accessible and responsive to a privileged few than to the wider New Zealand public he was elected to serve.

Horncastle may see this as harmless snapshots of political engagement. Though, it is a reminder that proximity to power can raise red flags, and when that proximity is openly celebrated by those close enough to enjoy it, New Zealanders have every right to question what that says about who truly has the PM’s attention.
