Matthew Tukaki questions Government’s transparency over email and document handling

Political Commentator and Māori Broadcaster Matthew Tukaki has sharply critiqued the Government’s handling of official information, using an appearance on The Bradbury Group’s flagship political show hosted by Waatea News to question whether ministers and senior staff are being held to the same standards they once demanded of others.

Tukaki accused the Government of becoming embroiled in what he described as “dirty, filthy politics” amid ongoing scrutiny over the use of private email accounts and the handling of sensitive documents.

“Dirty, filthy, rotten scandals are afoot,” Tukaki said.

Tukaki pointed to the case of former Labour minister Claire Curran, who resigned from Cabinet in 2018 after failing to properly disclose meetings with industry figures. He questioned why similar scrutiny was not being directed at current ministers, specifically referencing Education Minister Erica Stanford’s use of a private Gmail account for official communications.

“They harangued Claire Curran out of office. They harangued her from Parliament. Have we all forgotten about Stanford and her private use of Gmail?” he said.

The comments come as questions continue to be raised about the handling of official information within Government and allegations that sensitive documents were transferred through unofficial channels rather than through established public service processes.

Tukaki said a staff member within Prime Minister Christopher Luxon’s office had taken possession of documents that should have been handled through formal and transparent procedures. He argued accountability should extend beyond ministers and reach senior staff if proper protocols had not been followed.

“We’re meant to be about transparency. That’s what this Government is apparently meant to be about,” he said.

“I reckon the chief of staff in Luxon’s office needs to fall on his sword and be sacked.”

Tukaki challenged the Prime Minister over what he described as a lack of oversight within the Beehive.

“What else is going on in your office, mate? You obviously have no clue,” he said.
