Night-time prowlers caught red-handed in Central Auckland

Two would-be night-time prowlers have found themselves in custody after being caught allegedly rifling through a parked car in Central Auckland in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Police were called to Cross Street about 1.43am after a sharp-eared resident heard a disturbance and spotted two men rummaging through a Mazda Demio, with one reportedly trying to start the vehicle.

Acting Auckland Central Area Prevention Manager Inspector Mark Clayton said officers were nearby and moved quickly later stopping the pair before they could slip away.

The men, aged 42 and 47, were arrested without incident. The pair have been charged with unlawfully interfering with a motor vehicle and are due to appear in the Auckland District Court.

Police later confirmed the Mazda Demio had been reported stolen earlier in the night from a Glenfield address.

Inspector Clayton said stolen vehicles are often used to commit further offences, making the quick response from police crucial.

The stolen car has since been recovered and enquiries continue into how it was taken in the first place.
