Who is funding Opportunity Party’s sudden political rise in the polls?

There is a legitimate question hanging over the remarkable rise of the Opportunity Party ahead of New Zealand’s 2026 general election: what is driving it?

A party that previously sat on the political margins is now polling comfortably above the crucial 5 percent threshold. A recent 1News Verian poll placed Opportunity at 8 percent, potentially giving it a serious path into Parliament.

Some of that momentum may reflect growing frustration with Labour and National.

Voters are willing to look beyond the two major parties, and Opportunity has successfully made itself out as a pragmatic, evidence-based alternative willing to work across traditional political divides.

But its political rise has coincided with a significant increase in financial backing.

Electoral Commission records show Opportunity received $179,401 in party donations during 2025. Publicly disclosed donations increased in 2026, including payments of $80,000 and $75,000 from Alan Wilderland in late June, following another $25,000 donation in May.

Records also show protected donations of $60,000 and $10,000 during June.

None of this proves anything improper. Political parties need money to campaign, advertise, organise volunteers and reach voters. But when a party’s polling and fundraising rise rapidly at the same time, scrutiny is justified.

How much of Opportunity’s growing profile is being driven organically by ordinary voters, and how much is being amplified by substantial financial backing?

There is another issue Opportunity itself has created.

The party says it wants to “clean up politics” and has proposed banning company donations while limiting individual political donations to $30,000. Yet Opportunity has accepted several donations above that proposed limit this year.

Leader Qiulae Wong has defended the decision, saying the party has to “play the game with everyone else” if it wants to reach Parliament. That argument may be politically realistic, but it also exposes an uncomfortable contradiction. A party campaigning to change the rules is currently benefiting from the very system it says needs changing.

Opportunity’s supporters may see its rise as evidence that voters are finally breaking away from an exhausted political establishment.

Some may wonder whether money is helping manufacture the perception of unstoppable momentum. Neither conclusion should simply be assumed.

In an election year, voters deserve to know about the big money behind a political party’s rise.

I like their clear vision for our grandchildren for the future. The rest attack personally, name call, face bait and some climate deny. The coalition has no vision for all Kiwis, just get rich, rape resources and dam the bottom feeders.
