The anticipation felt like the return of a political smear machine that has steadily lost its influence.

When Slater began publishing material alleging wrongdoing, it appeared in the tone he has relied upon for years, dressed as seismic disclosure and framed to imply that a major scandal was already unfolding. The reaction that followed revealed a different reality as the campaign failed to spread beyond his own ecosystem and quickly lost momentum.

Slater’s political rhetoric has historically been capable of bending news cycles by introducing suspicion and pressure, but this time the urgency he attempted to generate did not extend beyond a small and familiar audience, leaving the campaign without the wider validation it needed to ignite.

The focal point of Slater’s latest smear campaign was a clash inside MUMA involving union organiser Matt McCarten and Chief Executive of MUMA Tania Rangiheuea, who is married to Labour MP Willie Jackson. Slater attempted to frame the situation as proof of institutional dysfunction and political interference, releasing drafts of internal documents and speculating about leadership turmoil while positioning the dispute as a cover-up already in motion, as if suspicion itself could be treated as evidence.

The rhetoric was familiar and the stakes were inflated as usual, but the political environment around him had changed, and instead of generating the escalation he relies upon, the campaign simply fizzled out.

More than a decade ago, the Whale Oil blog sat at the centre of a political influence network that operated through leaks, reputational destruction and coordinated pressure campaigns, and for a period it proved disruptive enough to shape political discourse, intimidate opponents and elevate Slater’s public presence.

Over time that approach collided with reality in courtrooms as well as the public arena. In multiple legal proceedings Slater’s work was found defamatory and malicious, with significant damages awarded.

In the long defamation battle brought by Matthew Blomfield the High Court ordered Slater and his company to pay $475,000 in damages after finding his publications were false, defamatory and malicious, recording in precise legal language that the campaign was designed to destroy a man’s reputation and noting the years of obstruction, delay and conduct intended to frustrate the legal process. In the Human Rights Review Tribunal he was separately found to have interfered with privacy through the harmful disclosure of personal information and was ordered to pay $70,000 in damages for humiliation, loss of dignity and injury to feelings, alongside formal orders restricting further misuse of that material. The pattern continued in Craig v Slater, where ten defamatory publications resulted in $325,000 in general and aggravated damages and a further $95,000 in costs, with the Court emphasising the serious reputational harm, the deliberate nature of the campaign and the refusal to retract.

These findings did more than wound his platform, as they documented a pattern of escalation that followed him into subsequent campaigns, shaping how his claims are received.

Subsequent legal battles, including defamation losses and bankruptcy, undercut the platform, and when Whale Oil finally shut down the era it represented faded with it.

Slater never disappeared entirely. He resurfaced on new channels including his current project The Good Oil. The digital landscape has become more fragmented, and the public appetite for scandal-driven commentary has thinned out even as he continues attempts to generate controversy with increasingly little substance.

Slater once dictated the pace of conversation but now competes with a crowded field of voices and an audience far more sceptical of aggressive framing within the political sphere.

Slater’s December coverage of the MUMA dispute followed the recognisable contours used during the Whale Oil-era. He hosted McCarten on a podcast to outline allegations of bullying and anti-union behaviour and published leaked documents padding them with broad claims about suppressed reviews and obstructed investigations.

He resorted to insult and degradation, referring to Rangiheuea as Jackson’s “manky missus,” language that drew strong condemnation and shifted attention away from his allegations and back onto the toxicity of his methods.

Slater’s rhetoric was engineered to provoke outrage, but it backfired, leaving Slater diminished by a campaign that revealed just how little force his once-powerful smear apparatus now carries. This is what happens when a smear campaign meets resistance instead of amplification.

Slater’s narratives rely on rapid outrage, media repetition and institutional panic, but this time he encountered pushback, procedural discipline and a press that refused to carry the frame.

Mainstream media’s response was restrained throughout. High-profile journalists from major news outlets asked questions but chose not to follow Slater’s framing or amplify the leaked material despite his calls for the media to give it attention he was seeking.

People within Slater’s close orbit tried to frame the dispute as an urgent national issue and pushed hard for it to be treated as a matter of public interest.

Despite those efforts, the narrative never escaped his immediate audience and remained confined to the small ecosystem already invested in his rhetoric.

MUMA’s firm response helped cool the situation, and without mainstream media validation the story narrowed and stalled, eventually fading.

Deputy Chief Executive of MUMA Michael Tukaki dismissed the allegations and reframed the dispute citing the formal processes. He said McCarten was attempting to pressure the organisation and reiterated that the proper venue for resolving employment matters was the Employment Relations Authority.

Additionally, in a Waatea News segment [Matthew] Tukaki confronted Slater’s rhetoric head-on, arguing that the personal attacks levelled at Rangiheuea crossed a fundamental line.

Questions were raised about why McCarten was providing internal documents to Slater and the collaboration was characterised as aligning with someone whose history of political manipulation was well established.

In a fiery post to X [Matthew] Tukaki later condemned the language used to describe Rangiheuea, calling it a blatant act of misogyny and an affront to Māori women.

“You called a Māori woman a ‘manky missus.’ You should hang your head in shame,” he said. “No woman I know is anybody’s ‘manky missus.’ That kind of toxic, misogynistic abuse has no place in our society.”

He went on to challenge both Slater and McCarten, saying their behaviour reflected a pattern of hostility that should be called out at every opportunity.

An earlier Waatea opinion piece published by [Matthew] Tukaki made similar points framing Slater’s involvement as an extension of the tactics that defined Dirty Politics.

These responses did not escalate the conflict and the tone remained firm but measured, a sharp contrast to Slater’s portrayal of a manufactured crisis. The effect was a narrowing of the story rather than the widening he sought.

In the early 2010s Slater’s methods worked because they exploited a gap between public perception and the controlled environments of political communication. Today that gap is smaller because many have grown more familiar with the mechanics of smear campaigns. Leaked drafts and provocative language no longer guarantee momentum in a political environment that is far more aware of manufactured outrage, something Slater has not learned to understand while his tactics stay embedded in the year 2014.

The public has also become more aware of how reputational attacks function, particularly when wrapped in claims of moral indignation.

Employment Relations Authority cases stemming from the grievances continue and they will determine the substance of the dispute. Social media campaigns designed to distort the facts will not bring a measurable outcome to the table. That process will unfold without the theatrics Slater attempted to attach to it as his tactics that once worked now struggle to penetrate beyond a small circle of loyal followers.

The MUMA episode reveals the declining resonance of Slater’s approach as it recognises a political and media environment that is less reactive to provocation and conscious of context under all circumstances. Most of all, it reflects a wider fatigue with the idea that every workplace dispute or organisational disagreement must be transformed into a conspiracy.

Slater insists he is exposing truths others refuse to confront, but the public response increasingly signals something else. The machinery he once operated with such confidence is still turning, but the noise it produces has lost its force.

The political smear machine that once dominated headlines has become an echo of itself still attempting to provoke the same reactions but operating in a media and public environment that has largely moved on from the era in which those tactics could reliably succeed.

Not by proving a claim, but by degrading a target and daring others to join in. Waatea News General Manager, Matthew Tukaki, shut that down publicly, condemned the remark and framed it as an attack on Māori women, further challenging the silence that allows this conduct to survive. And in doing that, he shifted the story away from Slater’s insinuations and back onto Slater’s method.

[ 00:04:02,240 ] He was an employee of MUMA in an HR role, a very high-powered, if you like, leadership role. He left the organisation and there was a bit of a… out under which he lived, to be frank, and then came all these allegations of personal grievance that Matt McCarten was about to walk into the Employment Relations Authority and file 19 personal grievances. Well, we’ve been here before with Mr. McCarten, where he’s made that allegation, and nothing’s eventuated from it.

[ 00:04:30,050 ] To let everybody out there know that, while we are vigorously defending the attacks on us through the legal process, we will also stand up for what is right, and this is an organisation, Dale, as you know, that has been built on workers’ rights. And so, when you have a man who comes in and tries to say that we are the most toxic, worst employers and our CEO is a bully, we will absolutely stand back and say, absolutely not, your lies have to stop. [ 00:05:11,780 ] If this all sounds familiar, it should. Whale Oil was not an accident of the internet. It was rather a political weapon. It sat inside an influence network that traded on leaks, reputational destruction, and coordinated pressure. That is why 2014 mattered. It revealed the mechanics and the relationships that fed them. The public saw behind the curtain and Slater’s influence never recovered.

[ 00:05:40,480 ] But Slater never stopped trying. He simply moved platforms and rebranded. But the mechanics have always stayed the same.

[ 00:05:50,490 ] And this is where the record becomes definitive. In the Blomfield litigation, the High Court ultimately found Slater’s Whale Oil publication defamatory and malicious and awarded major damages. That dispute also produced a Human Rights Review Tribunal decision finding an interference with privacy, with damages and restraints imposed. Further, in the Craig proceedings, Slater was found liable for defamation and the damages were later assessed at a substantial figure, reflecting the scale of harm tied to what he published. These are repeated legal findings that Slater’s work lines. They confirm a pattern, escalate, attack, publish, then hide behind the language of commentary when the damage is done. In particular, the context Slater carries into every new smear campaign. It is why his claims are treated differently now, by the public. So when Slater tried to re-run the playbook at MUMA, it was received differently.

[ 00:00:00,000 ] The organisation did not panic. It pushed the dispute toward the Employment Relations Authority, where employment issues are meant to be tested. Tukaki rejected the personal attacks and questioned why internal documents were being handed to someone with a well-established history of political manipulation. That response deprived Slater of what he needed: drama and escalation. Instead, he got process and pushback.
