Prime Minister Christopher Luxon keeps saying New Zealand is “back on track” every opportunity since elected into office. His party prints the line across glossy posters placed in mailboxes across the country as if this form of propaganda can defeat any dissent or ridicule of a government unable to govern for its people. The promise is simple for National and rich-lister landlords. The delivery for people is not.

When the government strips away policy for people and pulls the focus from what the public actually experiences, the country sits somewhere between progress and political wishful thinking. The gaslighting is evident under all circumstances and the numbers insist inconsistencies.

Luxon wants the public to see a train gliding down a smooth rail but the data keeps tapping his shoulder and asking if he has checked the track recently.

The first boast about cutting wasteful spending and easing inflation sounds immaculate on paper the real figure is less obedient. Annual inflation reached three percent in the year to September 2025 according to RNZ reporting and Statistics NZ data. That places it on the upper border of the Reserve Bank’s comfort zone, not in the neighbourhood of triumph the government keeps advertising.

Household living costs climbed 2.4 percent in the same period according to Parliament’s Monthly Economic Review. Power bills and rent continue to rise. Food prices continue to frustrate anyone trying to budget without creative accounting.

The government calls this progress. The public, still staring down supermarket aisles, calls it a polite illusion.

Public service workers told the PSA they feel the system has been hollowed out. Health NZ is hiring but also losing staff to burnout and overseas pay rates and this is the part the government forgets to acknowledge. Luxon celebrates fiscal discipline. New Zealanders waiting in hospital corridors experience something else entirely.

Health NZ told the NZ Herald it brought on 2,100 nurses and 600 doctors by early 2025. The government deserved credit for those additions. The very same period saw hospitals reporting an ongoing shortage of thousands more nurses. Waiting lists remain long. Emergency departments continue to overflow.

It is progress that feels like standing still. Luxon points to the numbers. Clinicians point to the corridor they have been triaging in.

Seven billion in roads, schools and hospitals looks cinematic in a campaign as electioneering begins to claim vote bloc. Treasury documents tell a more patient story that much of the spend is maintenance. Some of the listed projects began years before this government took office. Councils continue telling media outlets their infrastructure issues are still dominated by broken pipes and storm damage rather than shiny rebuilds.

Transformation is the word the government wants to use. Slow patchwork is what the country actually sees.

Claims of ram raids dropping 85 percent and tens of thousands fewer violent crime victims competes directly with news reports publicly available. There’s an indication that retail crime has increased in several regions across the country.

Victimisation surveys show stable long term crime patterns rather than dramatic drops. Many retailers continue telling media they feel less safe, not more.

The phone ban works for classroom focus. Teachers told reporters it helps but does not solve deeper issues and the invasive curriculum rewrite continues with schools asking for clearer resources and support. The government calls it world class. Principals call it incomplete.

The difference lies in whether anyone can see the slogan “back on track” or the conditions all sectors are facing.
