Interesting column on Qiulae Wong’s Opportunity Party. Agree that the current two-party system stifles genuine MMP and forces minor parties to operate as accessories, rather than dealmakers.
The fear around Opportunity’s policy proposals, especially the land value tax and citizen’s income, reflects a reluctance to tackle the real issues New Zealand faces. Would be great to see a more debate on these topics rather than simply dismissing them as ‘radical’ or ‘socialist’
Critique of the ‘hostage situation’ voters are put in is also spot on and it’s time for real choice and accountability in our politics.
