The moment Cameron Slater’s MUMA smear completely fell apart

OPINION: Cameron Slater did not lose the argument at Manukau Urban Māori Authority because his claims were disproven in real time or because some decisive document emerged to contradict him. He lost it the moment he typed the words “manky missus” and assumed he could get away with it.

Slater’s reckless language is a tactic used to avoid engaging with the substance of his allegations, but that defence only works if language is incidental, and in Slater’s work it never has been.

The words Slater uses are not decorative; they are part of a fading smear machine stuck in the year 2014. The escalation, the sneer, the calculated degradation of a target are deliberate tools designed to assert dominance and force others into a frame he controls. When persuasion falters, Slater reaches for contempt, hoping it can do the work evidence cannot.

Slater lost his argument at the precise moment he chose to describe Chief Executive of MUMA Tania Rangiheuea as a “manky missus,” because in that instant he revealed that humiliation, not truth, was the point all along.

Calling Rangiheuea a “manky missus” is not what is expected in public discourse. It was a misogynistic reduction of a senior Māori woman to her relationship to her husband, Labour MP Willie Jackson, followed by a slur intended to invite derision. It exposed a worldview in which women in power are not engaged with on their merits but diminished as a matter of reflex. That tells us exactly how seriously Slater expected his audience to take the facts of the dispute itself, which is to say, not very.

The internal employment conflict at MUMA was always destined for formal processes, where allegations are tested against evidence and outcomes are determined by law rather than noise, but Slater attempted to pull it into a different arena altogether, one built on insinuation, selective leaks, and the performance of outrage. When the attempt failed to ignite beyond Slater’s own ecosystem, when mainstream media refused to launder his framing and the organisation itself refused to panic, the campaign stalled. The insult arrived as a last throw of the dice.

This is the point Slater’s defenders within his close orbit prefer not to confront, because it collapses the distinction they rely on.

Abuse is not a distraction from a failed argument; it is the admission that the argument has failed. When someone abandons persuasion in favour of degradation they are saying they no longer believe their claims can stand on their own.

This all followed a well-worn pattern, but the response to it did not. Matthew Tukaki’s condemnation did not amplify the spectacle or trade insult for insult. Tukaki framed the language plainly as misogynistic behaviour and refused to pretend it was anything else, and in doing so it drained the episode of the very oxygen Slater depends on, narrowing the story instead of expanding it and returning attention to the method rather than the manufactured drama.

Courts have repeatedly found Slater’s campaigns defamatory and malicious, documenting patterns of escalation, personal attack, and a refusal to accept responsibility once harm is done.

The “manky missus” remark fits seamlessly into that history, not as an outlier but as confirmation that the same instincts remain intact even as their effectiveness has waned.

In a fiery post to X [Matthew] Tukaki later condemned the language used to describe Rangiheuea, calling it a blatant act of misogyny and an affront to Māori women.

“You called a Māori woman a ‘manky missus.’ You should hang your head in shame,” he said. “No woman I know is anybody’s ‘manky missus.’ That kind of toxic, misogynistic abuse has no place in our society.”

He went on to challenge both Slater and Matt McCarten, saying their behaviour reflected a pattern of hostility that should be called out at every opportunity.

More than a decade ago, the Whale Oil blog sat at the centre of a political influence network that operated through leaks, reputational destruction and coordinated pressure campaigns, and for a period it proved disruptive enough to shape political discourse, intimidate opponents and elevate Slater’s public presence.

Over time that approach collided with reality in courtrooms as well as the public arena. In multiple legal proceedings Slater’s work was found defamatory and malicious, with significant damages awarded.

In the long defamation battle brought by Matthew Blomfield the High Court ordered Slater and his company to pay $475,000 in damages after finding his publications were false, defamatory and malicious, recording in precise legal language that the campaign was designed to destroy a man’s reputation and noting the years of obstruction, delay and conduct intended to frustrate the legal process. In the Human Rights Review Tribunal he was separately found to have interfered with privacy through the harmful disclosure of personal information and was ordered to pay $70,000 in damages for humiliation, loss of dignity and injury to feelings, alongside formal orders restricting further misuse of that material. The pattern continued in Craig v Slater, where ten defamatory publications resulted in $325,000 in general and aggravated damages and a further $95,000 in costs, with the Court emphasising the serious reputational harm, the deliberate nature of the campaign and the refusal to retract.

These findings did more than wound his platform, as they documented a pattern of escalation that followed him into subsequent campaigns, shaping how his claims are received.

There was a time when this kind of language was dismissed as part of the internet’s rough edges, but that tolerance has eroded as audiences have become more literate in how smear campaigns function and less willing to separate style from substance.

When Slater essentially crossed the line he did not expose a scandal or force a reckoning but instead he exposed the emptiness at the centre of his own campaign and, with it, the precise moment his argument ceased to exist.

He tried to frame an employment dispute as a scandal, and the attempt failed, not because the story was too complex, but because the country had already learned what he does. Here is what Slater pushed. An internal clash at MUMA, involving union organiser Matt McCarten and Chief Executive Tania Rangiheuea, who is married to Labour MP Willie Jackson. He framed it as institutional dysfunction and political interference, publishing internal documents, hinting at suppressed reviews, and wrote as if a cover-up was already underway.

He builds a suspicion first, then demands everyone else reacts to the suspicion as if it is proof. This is not newsroom standard reporting, and Slater only knows one way to do it. Escalation. This is how the machine is meant to work. If he can generate outrage quickly enough, he can drag everyone else into the frame. However, he overreached.

[ 00:01:58,630 ] He used misogynistic language to describe Rangiheuea. This is how he has always tried to bend an audience. Not by proving a claim, but by degrading a target and daring others to join in. Waatea News General Manager, Matthew Tukaki, shut that down publicly, condemned the remark and framed it as an attack on Māori women, further challenging the silence that allows this conduct to survive. And in doing that, he shifted the story away from Slater’s insinuations and back onto Slater’s method.

You called a Māori woman, a wāhine, a ‘manky missus.’ You filthy dogs. You literally called her a manky missus. You should apologise to every woman in society today. Because I tell you what, the women I know, I know what he’s made of.

[ 00:03:22,750 ] This is what happens when a smear campaign meets resistance instead of oxygen. Slater’s campaigns rely on mainstream repetition. It’s a form of fuel for his narratives.

[ 00:03:37,170 ] He writes to provoke, then waits for bigger outlets to repeat the frame, even if they are trying to be balanced, because repetition spreads the contagion. But this time, the press refused to play the role.

[ 00:03:52,230 ] Coverage outside Slater’s ecosystem was limited and most outlets did not adopt his framing or amplify the leaked materials.

[ 00:04:02,240 ] He was an employee of MUMA in an HR role, a very high-powered, if you like, leadership role. He left the organisation and there was a bit of a… out under which he lived, to be frank, and then came all these allegations of personal grievance that Matt McCarten was about to walk into the Employment Relations Authority and file 19 personal grievances. Well, we’ve been here before with Mr. McCarten, where he’s made that allegation, and nothing’s eventuated from it.

[ 00:04:30,050 ] To let everybody out there know that, while we are vigorously defending the attacks on us through the legal process, we will also stand up for what is right, and this is an organisation, Dale, as you know, that has been built on workers’ rights. And so, when you have a man who comes in and tries to say that we are the most toxic, worst employers and our CEO is a bully, we will absolutely stand back and say, absolutely not, your lies have to stop. Thank you.

[ 00:05:00,450 ] People in Slater’s close orbit tried to push it as urgent public interest reporting, but it went nowhere. The story stayed trapped in a small ecosystem.

[ 00:05:11,780 ] If this all sounds familiar, it should. Whale Oil was not an accident of the internet. It was rather a political weapon. It sat inside an influence network that traded on leaks, reputational destruction, and coordinated pressure. That is why 2014 mattered. It revealed the mechanics and the relationships that fed them. The public saw behind the curtain and Slater’s influence never recovered.

[ 00:05:40,480 ] But Slater never stopped trying. He simply moved platforms and rebranded. But the mechanics have always stayed the same.

[ 00:05:50,490 ] And this is where the record becomes definitive. In the Blomfield litigation, the High Court ultimately found Slater’s Whale Oil publication defamatory and malicious and awarded major damages. That dispute also produced a Human Rights Review Tribunal decision finding an interference with privacy, with damages and restraints imposed. Further, in the Craig proceedings, Slater was found liable for defamation and the damages were later assessed at a substantial figure, reflecting the scale of harm tied to what he published. These are repeated legal findings that Slater’s work lines. They confirm a pattern, escalate, attack, publish, then hide behind the language of commentary when the damage is done. In particular, the context Slater carries into every new smear campaign. It is why his claims are treated differently now, by the public. So when Slater tried to re-run the playbook at MUMA, it was received differently.

[ 00:00:00,000 ] The organisation did not panic. It pushed the dispute toward the Employment Relations Authority, where employment issues are meant to be tested. Tukaki rejected the personal attacks and questioned why internal documents were being handed to someone with a well-established history of political manipulation. That response deprived Slater of what he needed: drama and escalation. Instead, he got process and pushback.
